Both of us loved the location within the town, the staff were very well trained, helpful and efficient. The receptionist was friendly and helpful.

First impression driving up the road was what a lovely location, but once out of the car was saddened by the run down appearance of the lovely building the fabric always should be maintained as it starts to have an air of seediness and you cant help feeling that it the outside is not sparkling then the inside isnt either. We would have liked a choice of bedding as the feathers are not for everyone, it was also very dusty and just had a feeling of not being loved and was exceptionally dark and dismal. As we had several couples using their bedroom above us as a party room until 2.30 A.M. I went down to find there wasnt anyone on duty during the evening to tell, I stress this as for us a bedroom is for relaxing and the rooms downstairs are for chatting, drinking, music etc. This was our first break for 4 yrs due to circumstances and it was only 2 days - 1 night and we ended up having a very broken night when I expect people should respect others and finish at around 11 ish . I felt very alone without anyone on duty and certainly couldnt call it an emergency but would have liked a member of staff just to as them to use somewhere else ie. We have 6 children from 32 to 18 so are not out of touch at all and are certainly not party poopers but we were so very disappointed that we wanted a lovely meal and perhaps bit of tv and time together followed by a good nights sleep and ended up being shattered with a fairly long journey home. We also realise that we were unlucky but felt that this could have been stopped if a member of staff were on duty to as them to move after 11.30, we shouldnt have to takle the situation ourselves at that time of night.

Parking was easy & Hotel located in the centre of town. Friendly staff.

Weird pokey tired looking room down long long rambling corridor. Only one plug socket so it was either watch tv or make a cup of tea or charge my phone. Food was average. Church bells nearby rang all night on the hour.... & possibly more! A bit disappointed on the whole

The building has character and the room perfectly adequate. The location is picturesque and convenient for the town centre and shops. Some of the staff were friendly and professional. The management team handled our complaints (plural) about the standard of restaurant service very well. We would recommend the hotel but would stress that some of the staff, and therefore the service as a whole, is well below what one is entitled to expect in a hotel within this price range.

Some of the restaurant staff require a substanial amount of training to bring them up to even a basic standard.

Incredibly good value for the money, cosy room, very good breakfast, free WiFi, really very recommendable

Comfortable bed. Food value for money.

The room was far from clean. Cobwebs hanging in corners. Desk and lamps were filthy. Very poor. This was sold as a superior double....a bit threadbare for that description. Would have welcomed a minimal reduction in price but reception just said sorry. Not the way to persuade me to come back.

Ideally placed hotel for those seeking one or more night's accommodation when travelling either to Wales or The Midlands. Staff were friendly and there was a nice informal feel to the hotel. Had exceptional views of the River Wye and in the gardens etc adjacent one was able to find quite a lot of peace.

I have no detrimental views re this hotel, but perhaps would have been nice to have had the odd paint/decorating/carpeting here and there. The specific room given was large and pretty comfortable.

The hotel staff were friendly. Our room had beautiful views over the river and countryside and was bright and spacious with a small balcony area. The food was good, although there was sometimes quite a wait for it; not so much in the more formal restaurant but particularly in the Riverview bar. Having said that, it was a busy night. There was also a pretty garden. Suggestion: While we were there it rained and we were in the annex. Maybe an umbrella stand with umbrella's could be offered at the entrances to the annex and hotel for guests to use when going from one to the other.

Having to wait quite a while for meals. Outside (building) could do with a little painting - Inside was ok.

Staff were welcoming, room and facilities were good despite smke alarm fault going off around 11pm in a number of rooms.Breakfast was good. We last stayed at the hotel in 1968 on our honeymoon.

Having booked for a dinner in the dining room we were asked to swap to the Bar as a wedding was over running. It was not explained that the arrangements were that it was not just a change of venue with the dining room service. It turned out to be far from the 'fine dining' experience that we had hoped for! I feel that more effort could have been made to find an alternative venue as there were only two couples trying to have a quiet meal. The bar was noisy and it was not just the wedding guests but the hotel seemed to be a town friday night drop in place. I mention this andd although it sounds like a complaint I do so so consideration can be given to functions over running and its effect on other paying guests. You really need a lift!

The food and service was good

Being an old building, the wnodws in my single room over a converted stable block did not fully close but it was only minuys 3 degress so not too bad.

the pleasant surprise I got when entering the room and finding a large purpose built room with balcony two double beds and a great view. This was all for a great price.

Our dog Dyson loved it, we loved it, all the staff were helpful and friendly. Our room was lovely with plenty of space. This was our second visit and won't be our last.

I liked the location and views very much and the character of the old hotel. The receptionists were very helpful and my single room was spacious and comfortable and excellent value.

Staff other than receptionists, although competent, lacked warmth and welcome to a solo traveller. Service was slow because not enough staff on duty. Food very basic. Room could do with full length mirror and hairdryer. Bathroom was cold.

        • Older travelers
          8.8

          location, breakfast

We booked a cheap room for an overnight stay, the room needed an update as did the corridors leading to it. Saying that it was clean and comfortable, you only get what you pay for and £50 for the night was reasonable. If we stay there again I would definitely go for a better room with a veiw.
